3d Range Imaging Camera Sensing for Active Safety in Construction

چکیده
Accident reports in the United States’ construction industry show over 1,000 fatalities for each of the past eleven years. Most of these accidents are related to falls and close contacts to equipment or other harmful substances. Although these accident statistics would have been significantly worse if safety training and best practices had not been provided to workers, the assessment of critical situations often involves the experience and judgement of field personnel, such as of safety coordinators. The manifold of accidents and their repetitive nature, however, allows the conclusion that proper inspection of construction sites is often not performed accurately or safety coordinators are not on hand when needed. For these reasons, this research utilizes emerging technologies to assist in the safety decision making process. This paper presents a review of the safety problem in construction. It then focuses on automated data collection devices and data processing algorithms which can become part in an active safety system for construction applications. A research approach is presented to use and develop emerging sensing technologies for accident avoidance. The purpose was to apply a 3D Range Imaging Camera as part of active sensing technologies that allow fast and accurate range measurements. The collected range data was used to generate real-time feedback about the location of objects in the field-of-view of the sensor. The experiments and data analysis performed demonstrate that construction safety can be improved by using emerging technologies such as 3D Range Imaging Cameras. In a workforcematerial-machine dominant environment such as construction, more research is necessary to further validate the developed methods in long-term studies and in outdoor environments.

Performance of a Time-of-Flight Range Camera for Intelligent Vehicle Safety Applications
A variety of safety-enhancing automobile features can be enabled by microsystems that can sense and analyze the dynamic 3D environment inside and outside the vehicle. It is desirable to directly sense the 3D shape of the scene, since the appearance of objects in a 2D image is confounded by illumination conditions, surface materials, and object orientation. To overcome the disadvantages of 3D se...

Due to the complexity and variability of capital construction sites, real-time monitoring remains an elusive goal. As unit price continues to fall, camera networks are becoming increasingly viable sensing modalities. The benefits of combining multiple, overlapping image sources include the ability to produce 3D scene reconstruction as well as localize and track objects. In the construction doma...

Active range sensing using structured-light is the most accurate and reliable method for obtaining 3D information. However, most of the work has been limited to range sensing of static objects, and range sensing of dynamic (moving or deforming) objects has been investigated recently only by a few researchers. Sinusoidal structured-light is one of the well-known optical methods for 3D measuremen...
متن کاملModeling 3D Scenes: Paradigm Shifts in Photogrammetry, Remote Sensing and Computer Vision
Modeling of 3D scenes has been the defining subject in photogrammetry or remote sensing for more than 100 years, and it is now for about 30 years one of the main subjects in computer vision. There are recently significant paradigm shifts in both areas. Digital imaging reshaped photogrammetry and remote sensing, and active vision (e.g., integrating laser range finder, SAR, or structured lighting...
متن کاملAn Overview of Passive Vision Techniques
This section surveys passive optical techniques for recovering scene shape and reflectance characteristics from images. The objective is to acquire images of a scene observed from different viewpoints and possibly different illuminations, and from these images to compute scene shape and reflectance at every surface point. Given estimates of shape we can fabricate duplicate 3D models using techn...
